Valneva is a fully integrated, commercial stage biotech company focused on developing innovative lifesaving vaccines.

Valneva’s portfolio includes two commercial vaccines for travelers: one for the prevention of Japanese encephalitis (IXIARO®) and the second (DUKORAL®) indicated for the prevention of cholera and, in some countries, prevention of diarrhea caused by ETEC.

The Task

Back in 2006, Intercell, the predecessor company to Valneva, decided to grant Novartis the global distribution rights for its novel Japanese Encephalitis vaccine IXIARO. When Novartis decided to leave the vaccine business and divest the vaccine franchise to GSK, Valneva had the unique opportunity to retain the distribution rights and take its faith in its own hands. To drive this, Valneva was seeking an international vaccine specialist with deep knowledge about both the vaccine and the organizational structures.

The Solution

Initially, all possible scenarios have been assessed and evaluated with a focus on the impact on the organisational structure, business partners, public perception and profit.

Once the decision for self-marketing has been made, activities to either build own proper structures in certain countries or select and contract adequate distribution partners have been kicked-off.

Capricorn Consilium has been deeply involved in both the analysis as well as the execution phase. Today, since 2017, Valneva owns a global distribution structure and enjoys two-digit million sales and two-digit growth rates.
